AMD’s 4×4 & 65nm

Let’s start this off with a bang.

Lately there’s been alot of talk about AMD’s 4×4, even the recent supposed “leaked” roadmap from the untrustworthy dutch site Tweakers.net giving us some interesting, but likely fake, roadmaps for 4×4 & 65nm.

The truth of 4×4 lies here: You WILL be able to buy CPU’s (Dual) for less than $1,000 with all other components included, that is confirmed by AMD. Another truth is K8L, Dual & Quad-Core variations, will work with the system as well. 65nm is right on track for launch along with 4×4 in December of this year. Rumors say 65nm might launch in October, which would be very very nice and allow AMD time to even further mature the process to produce 3GHz+ chips at stock for lower prices by the time K8L arrives in Mid-2007.

Intel Fanboys are having a field day over Tweakers.net (Intel Fanboy website) and their “leaked” (fake) roadmap. Alot of them still think it won’t be cheap, despite hundreds of quotes from AMD’s corporate folks stating it will be (you can’t fix stupid). The truth is 4×4 is an evolutionary design, not revolutionary and AMD doesn’t call it that (though the folks @ TheInq get mad at AMD for doing something better than Intel and say it isn’t revolutionary like AMD called it that, which is untrue…but hey, what do ya expect from TheInq).

The so-called “report” from Tweakers claims you’ll have to buy them in pairs, but I don’t think we’ll fret over paying $600 for 2 FX-60’s (I sure wouldn’t) over $1200 for a single Kentsfield if in-fact that is true. The one thing I’d believe on there is the 65nm talks, that 65w is the new TDP for top-end 65nm. Comparing that to Intel, it is the same. Conroe 2.66GHz = 65w TDP (truly 80w though) and the 2.93GHz is 75w (90w truly) so AMD has a slight advantage for their first time at 65nm — impressive to say the least.

The biggest quarrel I have is them stating Socket 1207 will be used for 4×4 — which seems VERY unlikely as that puts unwanted pressure on Opteron64 market. That “report” looks more and more foolish as you read.

We’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out, but it looks deafingly good for AMD, and likely will only get better as time goes on.

The Beginning!
